1. What is Impact?

Impact focuses on the demonstrable difference that you have made in the workplace, as a direct result of your management skills. This need not necessarily be beyond the  scope/remit of your usual job role (but often it will) but must result in significantly improved business performance or results.

Successful completion of significant projects, for which you were personally responsible and where the organisation clearly gained, is good material for Impact. For example:

• Successfully implementing positive, beneficial changes to organisational, divisional or departmental structure, policies, systems or processes
• Creating something significant that did not exist previously; product, service or market development
• Turning a department or business activity around
• Achieving targets or objectives well above what was thought possible or expected
• Making significant savings or performance improvement via a new way of doing things
• Increasing profit or marketing share
Impact requires that you show a ‘demonstrable Impact in real terms’ (operational or strategic) to the success of your organisation as a direct result of your application of Leadership and Change Management skills.

2. How do I know if I’ve made an Impact?

We’ve created a diagnostic questionnaire to help you identify whether Chartered Manager is right for you, and consider a potential focus for your Business Impact and CPD submission documents.

Completion of the diagnostic should take no more than 10-15 minutes, and on completion you will be provided with tailored feedback to start you on your route to Chartered Manager.

Access the diagnostic via the following link – http://cmgrdiagnostic.managers.org.uk/

3 . What is CPD?

CPD is a descriptive statement of your learning and development as a manager over the last 12-18 months.

Learning and development is not restricted to formal training courses, and may occur through day-to-day activities. Examples include:

Action learning; Coaching; Delegation; Distance Learning; E-learning; Exercises; Job rotation; Secondments; Lectures/talks/conventions/conferences; Mentoring; Research e.g. Internet, books, journals, etc.

We provide a CPD template with questions structured to help you to provide a sequential account which starts with learning objectives and concludes with what you learned, and how you applied that learning in the workplace to make you a more effective manager.

4. Does being a Member of the CMI automatically make me a Chartered Manager?

No, Chartered Manager is an award/designation separate from Membership. You have to submit documents that:

• describe the outcomes of your management learning or development (CPD) over the last 18 months

• demonstrate your practical application of Leadership and Change Management skills leading to improved business performance or results realised in the last 18 months

These are assessed, and if successful you’re awarded Chartered Manager.

5. Are there any entry criteria for Chartered Manager?

To achieve our Chartered Manager award, you need to be a Member or Fellow of the Institute, through qualification or experiential assessment.

A list of appropriate qualifications approved for entry to Membership and Chartered Manager can be found at www.managers.org.uk/approvedquals or you contact us for more information

6. Can I complete Chartered Manager if I do not have a management qualification approved for Membership?

If you are an experienced manager with 5 or more years' experience you can be assessed jointly for Membership and Chartered Manager. You will need to complete a combined Membership & Chartered Manager application form, plus the requirements of the Chartered Manager assessment process.

7. How long will it take me to complete Chartered Manager?

That depends on the route you choose:

Online with Advisor Support - you compile your own submission documents and supporting evidence (with support from an Advisor), and submit them for assessment via our secure online system. Through this route you could be awarded in as little as 4-6 months (with a time commitment of 20-30 hours). Professional Discussion - through an on-site visit from one of our Assessors, who will assess your claim for Chartered Manager, review your supporting evidence on-site, and write up submission documents based on your discussion. Through this route the award can be achieved in as little as 2-3 months (with a time commitment of 5-10 hours).

8. How much does Chartered Manager cost?

• Contact us for detail.

9. If I register for online assessment can I change to Professional Discussion at a later date?

If you decide that you would like to upgrade to Professional Discussion you can do so by contacting the Chartered Manager team who will arrange for top-up payment and for an assessor to contact you.

10. Why is Chartered Manager a renewable award?

Chartered Manager is unique as it is valid for a period of three years and remains current through an online renewal process.

Completing a renewal cycle provides certification of current competence, helps you demonstrate your ongoing value to the business and supports you to further develop your career

11. Maintaining the award and costs/efforts involved

In order to maintain your award you will be prompted on an annual basis to provide details of, and demonstrate, ongoing CPD activity

By the third anniversary of your award, you will need to renew your Chartered Manager status and we will ask you to follow a similar review of your managerial achievements since gaining (or retaining) CMgr status – demonstrating how you have applied Leadership and Change skills to realise an impact for your organisation.

Please note, however, that this renewal process has been designed to be considerably faster than the original Chartered Manager submission and should take 2 – 4 hours to complete. There is no panel interview for this renewal.
